Mark - it isn't just bikes that are a couple of years old that have relatively low mileage. Some folks who buy bikes simply want to take the occassional Sunday ride - and as the years pass the mileage doesn't build up very fast.
I got my '88 Savage last summer - with 13,000 kms on it - that is just slightly over 1,000 kms or 600 miles per year and I will gaurantee that it rode 7 or 8 thou in the first 4 years and the rest came very very slowly.
Older machine don't loose interest but priorities change - and riding opportunities change with them. I have a 1968 Suzuki TC-250 ( X-6 in the States, Super Six in Europe) that I bought new back in '68 - it has a total of 13,500 miles on it and of those less than 500 have been riden in the past 20 years. I keep it for personal reasons and because it has a great sentimental value to me.
Across the world there are motorcycles sitting in barns and sheds and garages like this - loved and cherished but rarely ridden. It is just a reality of our favorite sport.
Oh, I did ride 4,000 + kms last summer so my Savage has significantly increased its mileage.
Now if my plans to attend WD and WDO's rally had just worked out there would have been another 5,000+ on the clock - oh well = there is always 2001 to hope for
Keep the rubber side down
